Leave it blank.
Write “competitive.”
What if they ask for desired salary on the application?
Leave it blank.
Write “negotiable.”
Write “to be discussed.”
You might be asking if not filling this out completely will work against you. Let’s look at the scenarios.
You could be filling out a generic application form that is mostly intended to get your personal information and brief work experience. Maybe they don’t even use the salary range prominently in their screening process, so if you don’t answer directly it’s no big deal. But if you put in a number that is too high or too low, you’re giving them a reason to eliminate you.
What if you’re answering an ad with an intimidating footer in all caps that says, “APPLICATIONS THAT DO NOT INCLUDE FULL SALARY HISTORY WILL BE DISCARDED AND NOT CONSIDERED.” Well, what does that tell you about the company? A great company wants to hire the best people at a mutually beneficial rate, and starting off like this raises a red flag for me.
Last, you want to avoid this scenario in the first place. Remember that 80 percent of jobs are secured through networking. If you have a connection at the company, you can often bypass HR completely. Or if you feel you must put a figure, your research will at least get you to the range where you will not be eliminated—but you should still avoid it.
